The Association for Persons with Special Needs (APSN) Katong School received the donation of playground equipment from PLAYPOINT (Singapore) Pte Ltd worth $20,000. This came from two former students of Bedok View Secondary which is situated next to Katong School.

Motivated by an article in The Straits Times’ article titled ‘Playgrounds ‘R’ Us’ about PLAYPOINT, dated 13 January 2010, Katong School principal Mrs Choo Swee Gek made contact with the company. Mr Jason Sim, Managing Director of PLAYPOINT agreed to sponsor APSN with a set of playground equipment.

APSN Katong School views the concept of Play as important. It gives an authentic environment to promote social skills especially effective in teaching the value of sharing. The concept is not only fun but encourages physical activities that build self confidence when students learn new skills like swinging, climbing and sliding. They also improve communication skills and understand team work. Such play also improves co-ordination.

The school emphasizes on play activities because young children learn best through play. It is stress free for young students and encourages in the development of motor skills and creativity. The playtime is incorporated into the PE lessons of primary students, where twenty minutes are devoted for supervised play.
